Design is One documents the modernist design endeavors of Massimo and Lella Vignelli and their passion for design. Throughout the film, it becomes clear that their design solutions are based on fundamental design principles, aesthetics, functionality and common sense. The film also reveals the Vignelli’s humanness and sense of humor. Designers of all things will enjoy this film.
The film picks up after the Vignellis relocated from Italy to New York in the 1960s and gave the world everything from the logo on the grille of Ford pickups to the design of the New York City subway system and Heller’s perfectly stackable plastic dinnerware, a household staple from the 1970s onward. A wealth of Vignelli designs are brought to the camera.
Film makers Guerra and Brew also recruit peers like designer Milton Glaser, design historian Steven Heller, and architect Richard Meier to talk about the Vignelli’s impact and working style. Much of the reward of the film is the pleasure of spending time with them, to get to know their thinking and their equally charming and captivating personalities.
